Renaming backup files in Ottomatic Snapshots

This is regarding servers hosted on Ottomatic.cloud. Ottomatic creates Snapshot backups. We have times when we want to look at data from a snapshot backup. Using the restore command doesn’t work because that overwrites the live file. With backup files that are created by the FileMaker scheduled script, I’m able to rename the file first and then restore it so the original file on the server stays in place. I’m not able to rename the files stored in the snapshot folder. I’m assuming that is because of how the files are stored. I doubt there is a way to allow those files to be renamed.

What would be helpful would be to have an option in the File Manager to move a file to a location other then Data/Databases folder. In this scenario, I could move a file from the Snapshots folder to say the root level of the Backup folder. I could then rename the file and restore it to the Data/Databases folder and avoid overwriting the current file.

Currently, we have to download the backup file to the desktop, rename it and then upload it back to the server. This is fine for smaller files, but when we get into files that are large (several GBs or more) it becomes time consuming and the upload process becomes unreliable. Being able to move the files around the server would be a much quicker and more reliable process.

Hey Patrick,

If we were able to rename it and put it in the live databases folder would that do what you’re thinking? we could probably change the name on the install. We’re also likely going to add that ability to move files around in the file manager, which sounds like it would do what you’re looking for as well.

Kyle,
Being able to rename when restoring the file to the live database file is a great idea. That would make it even more streamlined. By moving the file to another folder, I was adding in steps that wouldn’t be necessary with your idea. Thanks.
