Smaller slack notifications

Hey OttoFMS team,

A quick feature request, would it be possible to have an option for shorter Slack notifications?

I support a vertical market solution which uses Otto and Slack notifications for deployments. We have a deployment which updates all files across all solutions, after about 5 or 6 sub deployments the Slack channel gets overwhelmed with the notifications.

My thoughts around a smaller Slack notification footprint would be to send one Slack message at the start of the overall deployment process. This would be a single line where the name of the deployment would be clickable to the OttoFMS console, eg.
Deployment : Name of Deployment started on server address

For each sub deployment (again one line only) just the result would be posted with the name of the sub deployment being clickable eg.
Sub-deployment # : Name of Sub Deployment completed Successfully

Or if you want to get really fancy, the ability to create our own Slack notification templates…

Hi James,

Thanks for the request. I can see how that might get annoying, and how being able to customize the slack templates would be great. But I am little concerned that it isn’t a general enough feature to be useful to everyone and the next person might want something slightly different.

What if we just let you send Webhooks for the events deployment events? You could then use something like Connect or Zapier or SimpleQ to handle how the messages get sent.

I like this because it is more generally useful and you get to decide exactly what happens to those notifications.

What do you think? Would that work for you?

I like the web-hook idea… would solve my requirement for a curl based notification - I can then pass whatever I want on down the chain

I like the Webhooks idea, that would provide us the means and flexibility needed.
